I would like to share an extract from “Steve Jobs” by Walter Isaacson in which Tim Cook, before he was made CEO of Apple, explained why “Apple would continue to soar even with Jobs absent:

We believe that we are on the face of the earth to make great products, and that’s not changing. We are constantly focusing on innovating. We believe in the simple not the complex. We believe that we need to…participate only in markets where we can make a significant contribution. We believe in saying no to thousands of projects, so that we can really focus on the few that are truly important and meaningful to us. We believe in deep collaboration and cross-pollination of our groups, which allows us to innovate in a way that others cannot. And frankly, we don’t settle for anything less than excellence in every group in the company, and we have the self-honesty to admit when we’re wrong and the courage to change. And I think, regardless of who’s in what job, those values are so embedded in this company that Apple will do extremely well.

Are you and your employees able to so clearly articulate your company’s values and why they are important to the success of your organisation in the way that Tim Cook did? Do you live these values in how you conduct yourself and your business every day? Do you regularly communicate these values to your employees? Are they reinforced in the content and style of your learning and development initiatives?

The Office Coach team is passionate about transferring knowledge and skills that will make a profoundly positive impact on both individuals and the businesses that they work in. We do this by understanding your value system and using it as the foundation on which soft skills are developed, on the behaviours that will translate into success for your business.

Contact us if you would like to discuss this theme further. You won’t get a generic sales pitch from us; we’ll listen to what is important to you and offer insights into how you can entrench a powerful value system in your organisation, just as they have done at Apple…

…Perhaps the conversation will lead to an opportunity for The Office Coach to be a catalyst for improved performance in your workplace.
